Named in honor of community activist Joel Bloom (1948-2007), the free community festival celebrates all things a’bloomin’ in the Downtown Arts District – art, music, and even the environment! Activities are designed to complement the neighborhood’s rotating outdoor gallery of murals and other artwork by renowned street artists.

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION: Available on surrounding streets and at nearby parking lots. Go Metro! Ride the train to the Little Tokyo Station. Ride the DASH! Take Route A. Be green! Consider biking, walking, carpooling, or driving electric, hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles.

ABOUT DOWNTOWN ARTS DISTRICT: Founded in the 1980s as an artist enclave, this 52-block neighborhood consists of artist studios and art galleries; coffeehouses such as Urth Caffé and Novel Café; restaurants and night spots as Wurstküche, Café Metropol, and Angel City Brewing; creative entrepreneurs; nonprofits such as Cornerstone Theater Company and Art Share Los Angeles; industrial businesses; and government agencies anchored by the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). It is in the heart of the city’s new Los Angeles CleanTech Corridor where a business campus is being built to develop sustainable technologies. The Downtown Arts District boundaries are Alameda Street on the west, the Los Angeles River on the east, the 101 Freeway on the north, and 7th Street on the south.

ABOUT LARABA: Founded in 1991, the Los Angeles River Artists & Business Association (LARABA) is a 501(c)(4) community organization that seeks to improve the quality of life and enhance opportunities in the Downtown Arts District by encouraging a lively and healthy social, cultural and economic environment, coordinating the voices of resident artists and businesses, and promoting the area as a creative community for the benefit of all Angelenos. To learn more about LARABA, visit www.laraba.org.

Here are some images from the exhibit I attended opening day 4/17/11.  Art Director Jeffrey Deitch, along with Roger Gastman, Aaron Rose, and Fab 5 Freddy spared no expense in mocking the streets using the gallery as an urban canvas.  It’s obvious that a lot of effort and energy was put into this exhibit.  There was a tremendous amount of detail and so much to see so give yourself at least 2-4 hours in the gallery to fully enjoy everything! I ran out of time and missed the the entire exhibit located on the far right, which I beleive were all the LA based artists.  I’ll be going back again soon.  Don’t forget to visit the Cosmic Fun room and watch the films!!!

If you haven’t had a opportunity to check this exhibit out I highly recommend that you do!  If you’re broke, keep in mind that the Geffen is open to the public for free on Thursdays from 5p-8p

Downtown Artwalk occurs every 2nd Thursday of every month right in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.  It’s FREE from 12PM-9PM. Definitely dope for mingling and checking out what local artists are up to.  I personally like to grab my skateboard, cruise, mingle, take pictures and gallery and bar hop.  The peeps are happening and the spots are crackin so check it out if you haven’t already.

This event is typically located around Spring and Main Streets from 2nd to 9th otherwise known as the historical “Gallery Row.”

Hi-Graff- collaborative LA Street Art
The show opens this Saturday, 5/7 at 7pm.  There may be some special prints available for you early birds.  Things will go until at least 11pm, and drinks will be available for everyone (booze for 21+).

A Little More about “Hi-Graff”
“Hi-Graff” An installation-based street art exhibition that explores the concept of Graffiti as a contemporary art movement; sponsored by Blue Canvas Magazine and VIVALAART!!

The exhibition, showcases graffiti in its most original form –collaborative murals applied directly to walls.  Though LA has seen hundreds of street art exhibitions in the past 5 years, there has always existed a growing disconnect between the artwork shown in the gallery shows and what these street artists produce on the streets. “Forcing a street artist to produce canvas or panel works as the only way of showcasing in a fine art gallery seriously compromises the quality of work, and direction these artists are taking.  We wanted to open up our walls to these artists so the final product will closely mimic the actual art production of these artists on the streets, in an in-door environment” (Curator Lee). This allows the audience to truly understand and juxtapose where their talents and aesthetic differences lie.  For “Hi-Graff”, Hold Up Art has brought together over 20 street artists to produce 10 separate collaborative murals highlighting unique trends and styles in Graffiti.

The links below are from the LA Times regarding the controversy behind Blu, his piece and MOCA.  Read up!  Whats your opinion?

The handmade laser graffiti gun created for the event by artist/computer programmer Todd Moyer is pretty awesome.  It’s a specially designed computer program that animates the light-graffiti so that it looks like dripping paint.  It was used to send a message to Jeffrey Dietch; MOCA’s Director and the public in efforts to protest the removal of Blu’s piece.  Blu was hired by Diecth to create a mural for MOCA’s “Art in the Street” exhibition in April but because of its controversial imagery Diecth had the piece whitewashed before the public could see it.

Graffiti artist Blu paints an antiwar mural on the wall of MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary downtown. The museum commissioned the work but then had it whitewashed so as not to offend the nearby V.A. hospital and Japanese American war memorial. (Justin T. Ho / For the Los Angeles Times / December 5, 2010)

This is a cool short stop motion film by Blu made in Buenos Aires and in Baden.
