Fracture: Daido Moriyama
Los Angeles CA 90036
tel 323 857-6000Japanese Pavilion, Level 3
Photographer Daido Moriyama (Japan, b. 1938) first came to prominence in the mid-1960s with his gritty depictions of Japanese urban life. His highly innovative and intensely personal photographic approach often incorporates high contrast, graininess, and tilted vantages to convey the fragmentary nature of modern realities. Fracture: Daido Moriyama presents a range of the artist’s renowned black-and-white photographs, exemplifying the radical aesthetic of are, bure, boke (grainy, blurry, out-of-focus), as well as the debut of recent color work taken in Tokyo. A selection of his photo books—Moriyama has published more than forty to date—highlights the artist’s highly influential experimentation with reproduction media and the transformative possibilities of the printed page. In total, Moriyama’s achievements convey the artist’s boldly intuitive exploration of urban mystery, memory, and photographic invention.
Born in Ikeda, Osaka, Daido Moriyama first trained in graphic design before taking up photography with Takeji Iwaniya, a professional photographer of architecture and crafts. Moving to Tokyo in 1961, he assisted photographer Eikoh Hosoe for three years and became familiar with the trenchant social critiques produced by photographer Shomei Tomatsu. He also drew inspiration from William Klein’s confrontational photographs of New York, Andy Warhol’s silkscreened multiples of newspaper images, and the writings of Jack Kerouac and Yukio Mishima.
This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with support from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation.
Organized by Edward Robinson, Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department, this is Daido Moriyama’s first solo museum exhibition to be shown in Los Angeles.

Hold Up Art – “Boys and Dogs” by Sunny Bak
October 14, 2011
Getting Beastie!
Oct 8 – Nov 2, 2011, Hold Up Art is showing “Boys and Dogs,” a collection of works by world-renowned photographer Sunny Bak. Her photos of the Beastie Boys and the “Licensed to Ill” tour solidified Sunny’s place as a serious rock and celebrity photographer. Simultaneously, her love of animals, especially dogs, led to the creation of the best selling People Magazine parody, Pupple. These two diverse collections of images represent the work that has defined Sunny’s career. About the show Sunny said, “It’s an homage to the beasty in all of us.”

Aftermath: Art in the Streets @ The Geffen Moca
May 31, 2011
Here are some images from the exhibit I attended opening day 4/17/11. Art Director Jeffrey Deitch, along with Roger Gastman, Aaron Rose, and Fab 5 Freddy spared no expense in mocking the streets using the gallery as an urban canvas. It’s obvious that a lot of effort and energy was put into this exhibit. There was a tremendous amount of detail and so much to see so give yourself at least 2-4 hours in the gallery to fully enjoy everything! I ran out of time and missed the the entire exhibit located on the far right, which I beleive were all the LA based artists. I’ll be going back again soon. Don’t forget to visit the Cosmic Fun room and watch the films!!!
If you haven’t had a opportunity to check this exhibit out I highly recommend that you do! If you’re broke, keep in mind that the Geffen is open to the public for free on Thursdays from 5p-8p

A Little More about “Hi-Graff”
The exhibition, showcases graffiti in its most original form –collaborative murals applied directly to walls. Though LA has seen hundreds of street art exhibitions in the past 5 years, there has always existed a growing disconnect between the artwork shown in the gallery shows and what these street artists produce on the streets. “Forcing a street artist to produce canvas or panel works as the only way of showcasing in a fine art gallery seriously compromises the quality of work, and direction these artists are taking. We wanted to open up our walls to these artists so the final product will closely mimic the actual art production of these artists on the streets, in an in-door environment” (Curator Lee). This allows the audience to truly understand and juxtapose where their talents and aesthetic differences lie. For “Hi-Graff”, Hold Up Art has brought together over 20 street artists to produce 10 separate collaborative murals highlighting unique trends and styles in Graffiti.
